The skating map of Lake Malaren is the most advanced map ever made where the skater's needs are in focus. The map has been developed in close collaboration with Marten Ajne, one of Sweden's most experienced and knowledgeable skaters who, among other things, is the author of the reference work The Big Book on Long-Distance Skating and The Sprinter's Guide to Lake Malaren. Marten has processed more than fifty years of ice and weather data and combined this with the accumulated experience within the skating clubs in Malardalen. The results are presented here in the form of two maps on a scale of 1:50,000 that cover the whole of Lake Malaren. Over 200 icing areas are shown with 11 different coloured zones, depending on the stage at which they freeze. In addition, great care has been taken on the lake's currents and weak areas, known shoals, ship channels and outflows. The map also includes recommended starting points, parking lots and suitable land passages. The book The Sprinter's Guide to Lake Malaren provides an in-depth understanding of how knowledge of the different areas of ice can be used when planning and carrying out skating trips. We have come to the conclusion that the best material for a map is Tyvek?. It is made of a synthetic fiber that makes the map completely insensitive to water and very tear-resistant. A Tyvek map does not break in the creases or lose color when you use it.
