Cycling along the Elbe - part 1: from Prague to Magdeburg
The source of the Elbe is located in the south of the high mountains on the Polish border. The river then flows through the central Bohemian mountains and the Elbsandsteingebirge (a mountain range on the banks of the Elbe) to emerge into the North Sea in the northern German hinterland near Cuxhaven.
The entire length of the Elbe River is 1165 km. In this guide, the cycling route starts in Prague and then follows the course of the Vlata (Czech tributary of the Elbe). From this point to Mageburg, you will alternate between the left and right banks of the Elbe. At times you will find quite equivalent variants.
The landscape around the Elbe is famous for its flora and fauna, which is why most of the places we pass through are protected nature parks. Here you will meet numerous species such as mallards, black-headed gulls, great blue herons and buzzards, but also storks, goosander, great cormorants, kestrels and beavers.
The Elbe is an important traffic route: it is navigable for more than 940 km from the North Sea to the Bohemian mountains. The main port cities on the Elbe are Hamburg and Magdeburg.
Length of the route: The total length of the route is 500 km. Variations of about 300 km on the other side of the river are available in this guide.
