No attempt to corral fells into meaningful groups can ever be wholly satisfactory; the Lake District simply does not lend itself to being parcelled. But in this east and north-eastern collection of walks, the reader is invited to explore not only some of the more populous areas, but those that are less well known, but no less delectable a part of the District. There is a measure of definition to this particular group: it is bounded on the east by the A6 at Shap, in the north by the A66, the Penrith to Keswick road. Towards the west, the A591 has been taken as a boundary, mainly because that unashamedly allows for the inclusion of a walk from Castlerigg stone circle, as well as along the splendid High Rigg ridge overlooking St John's in the Vale. It is to the south that the dividing line is less convincing, but generally swings eastwards from Dunmail Raise to the Kirkstone Pass and then all things eastwards.
