Mountain Travellers Handbook

Your Companion from City to Summit

In response to unprecedented numbers of trekkers and climbers heading for mountain regions outside of the UK, the BMC has published a new book that aims to enlighten and inform relatively inexperienced mountain travellers about a host of related issues.

The Mountain Traveller's Handbook contains 15 chapters and six appendices. Subjects covered include altitude illness, clothing and equipment, situations to avoid and what to expect on a typical day in the mountains. As well as a chapter on photographic and video techniques, the book has sections dedicated to satellite communications, raising sponsorship and the best time of year to visit key mountain destinations.

The BMC has also taken the opportunity to cover important topics such as environmental responsibilities, cultural considerations and issues surrounding hiring local staff. The book has been endorsed by the International Porter Protection Group and is forming part of the 2002 International Year of the Mountains.

The book's author is Paul Deegan, who has been assisted by nearly 100 advisors and contributors, including Chris Bonington, Reinhold Messner, Peter Hillary and Stephen Venables.

The full-colour book contains over 180 photographs on over 200 pages.
